5. Abstract :
In the 1930s Murray and von Neumann introduced the field of operator algebras. A key motivation for their introduction of this new field of mathematics was to provide a framework in which to study infinite dimensional unitary representations of groups. We will take a tour through some of the successes of the interplay between representation theory and operator algebras and then discuss some of our recent work on applications of representations of nilpotent groups to the theory of C*-algebras.
